Commodore / Gibson Race Recap

We had 10 boats in attendance with 9 of them racing in the Commodore Gibson race.  On Saturday’s race, we had a 10-15 knot southerly which made for a wonderful run all of the way from Meadow Point to Foulweather Bluff.  At the finish, it was new member Jean Higgins and her crew aboard Final Rose taking the victory in just over 2 hours 45 minutes, beating Outlaw by only a few minutes.
For the return race on Sunday, all the boats started in a light, 8 knot southerly.  Shortly before Point No Point, we were all treated to a humpback whale swimming between the racing boats – surfacing every so often to see who was in the lead.  Alas – shortly after Point No Point, the wind evaporated, and all the boats except for one made the call to motor home.  Derek Storm and Cindy Gossett aboard Outlaw sailed on, though, and managed to catch a building northerly to propel them home.  They captured the victory and finished in about 4 hours and 40 minutes.
Thanks to everyone in attendance for their potluck items Saturday night and breakfast on Sunday morning.  As usual, the food was great and enjoyed by all.  Special thanks go to Tom Kohrs and Cary Purvis on Island Mist for acting as our committee boat, calling starts, and recording finish times.
