Light Air, Good Fun on Commodore/Gibson
Seven CYC boats participated in this year’s Commodore/Gibson Race-cruise event, heading from Shillshole to Port Ludlow on Saturday, August 6, enjoying a picnic dinner, and returning the next day. Outlaw, sailed by Cindy Gossett and Derek Storm, won the Saturday race and was the only finisher on Sunday in light air.
The Saturday race began at the final start opportunity, Point No Point, and finished as Foul Weather Bluff, in a strong outgoing current
Sunday we also began at the final start opportunity, Apple Cove Point. This was after motoring through fog with visibility from 100 yards to half a mile, until it finally cleared at Point no Point, and then continuing to motor in the dead calm until we got near Apple Cove Point.
At that point we found a light northerly that we had hoped would build. After a 1410 start, the wind did not build, and everybody with any brains dropped out by around 1600. Cindy, however, had been in the sun too long and her brain switched into stubborn mode. Her crew took a nap, but she was able to finish at 1837, using the new flood tide to help get past the Meadow Point buoy. Actually it could have been worse. We rarely came to a complete stop and it wasn’t snowing or sleeting. To see more photos, click here.
