From the Helm | Recent Happenings at CYC Signal Bright Future

Commodore Wayne Balsiger

Fall is here and the weather is turning cooler. Some of the many recent happenings at CYC:

  • The PSSC Puget Sound Sailing Championship regattas were successful with increased participation this year thanks to the great work of Rear Commodore Bruce Van Deventer.  For the One-Design weekend we had six fleets and 55 boats racing.  For the big boat weekend we had  10 fleets and 84 boats racing.
  • Each PSSC weekend had music, food, raffles and parties after the racing.
  • The Commodore and Gibson races had seven racer-cruisers participate, staying at Port Ludlow overnight.
  • Volunteer bar tending training has produced first results with more volunteer hours at the bar.
  • Thanks to everyone that donated to the Junior program.  As you know we purchased 16 Opti’s this year with your money, and had a successful restart of junior instruction.
  • CYC Junior members did well in the Junior Olympic regatta on August 19-21.  These included Julian Martin, Nico Martin and  Blake Bentzen, who lead the region this year in the Opti’s.  Julian has qualified three times already for Team Trials and he is the 2011 Opti Bronze Fleet Champion. Nico won the latest Junior Olympics at age 10.  Thanks to everyone that has helped train them this year.
  • CYC is hosting an Advanced Opti Clinic next weekend (October 21-23).  It features coaching by the famed Argentinean coach Pablo Weber.  It is sold out.
  • The “Restart” CYC meeting have been going well.  Staff Commodore Bruce Sherman has an article from his view point posted on the web.
  • The Nominating Committee has presented its candidates for 2011. They are listed in an adjoining article.  A number of enthusiastic and talented people have volunteered to lead the club next year.
  • The Annual General Meeting is scheduled for Monday November 28.  Put it on your calendar.
  • While the weather may be cooler and the sailing slowing down somewhat, the clubhouse is warm with many members providing great ideas on what to do to improve CYC.  Join us on Mondays and add your energy and ideas. Following each meeting is a social time where camaraderie prevails.  CYC is becoming stronger and more valuable to members and that is a circle with a positive feedback circuit that makes the club stronger with more members.
