Bruce Van Deventer leads the slate of candidates for Officer and Board positions for 2013. The Nominations and Elections Committee has nominated the candidates listed below.

Under the CYC bylaws, additional nominees for Officers and Board positions may be made by a letter signed by 10 voting members and received by the Club (by mail, hand delivery or electronically) no later than by October 28, 2012; in addition, nominations for Board positions may be made from the floor at the General Meeting.

Officer Candidates:

Commodore, Bruce Van Deventer. Currently Vice Commodore, Bruce was a CYC Junior sailor in the 1970s. He later became involved with the racing program first as a whaler driver and then as a PRO. Bruce is a former Fleet Captain-Race and currently actively races a 505 and a Melges 24, Wiggle Room. He’s been the organizer for the CYC Rookie Rally for the past several years. Bruce is also a certified ski and snowboard instructor and instructor examiner. Bruce works at Boeing.

Vice Commodore, Brian Watkins. Currently Rear Commodore, Brian has been a CYC member since 2006.  He started racing in CYC races as a child in the early 1970s and has been enjoying sailing and boating ever since.  He has raced with some of the region’s best in Etchells, J-24s, and PHRF fleets, raced dinghies at Tufts, successfully skippered his own keelboat, Declaration of Independence, and has volunteered for several years with the Leukemia Cup. Currently, he is doing race committee and judging work for adult and junior events, and is the Seattle Yacht Club Sailboat Racing Director.

Rear Commodore, Stuart Burnell.  Currently Club Treasurer, Stuart joined CYC in 1997 when he was sailing in the Seattle Thunderbird Fleet. He has raced his Olson, 30 Enigma and a T-Bird, Predator. He was treasurer of both the Seattle and International Thunderbird fleets. He served as the CYC Treasurer in 2003 and 2004 and again in 2012. Currently he is actively racing his J-109, Tantivy, throughout the Puget Sound and a T-Bird, Kuma San, on the Lake.

Fleet Captain-Race, Bill Blodgett. Bill is our current Fleet Captain-Race.  He moved to Seattle in 2000 and in 2006 he purchased part of a Moore 24, Moore Cowbell.  He helps produce and promote the sailing gear at KAMgear International in Ballard.

Fleet Captain Cruise, Doug Stewart.  Doug is our current Fleet Captain-Cruise.  He has been a member of CYC since 1979. He and his wife Joan have raced and cruised on Madrugador, a Cal 40, since 1972.  Doug is a cardiologist at the University of Washington Medical Center.

Treasurer, Chris Pittack.  Chris started sailing as a kid but “drifted” away during high school and college.  He returned to sailing in the mid-1990s by becoming a member of the Cal 40 syndicate Wings.  While working abroad in Munich, Germany, Chris and his wife Anne discovered the 505, which they currently campaign in the PNW and abroad.  Chris and Anne spent many years crewing for a CYC member on his Express 37 and more recently have been aboard a local Farr 30.  When Chris and Anne are not sailing they can be found telemarking the side-country of Crystal Mountain or restoring their 1912 Craftsman home.  Chris and Anne have been members of CYC since 2007.

 Secretary, Wanda Creitz.  Following participation in a CYC Focus Group in 2011, Wanda was offered a year membership.  She has taken full advantage of the membership by serving on Social Committee and attending First Friday’s as well as other social events at CYC.  With her family, she lives aboard on a 40 foot Cruise-A-Home in the Lake Washington Ship Canal.  Her husband works in the maritime industry and her five-year old son (a CYC junior member and summer sailing camp alumni) sails his Opti and El Toro.  She and her family race and cruise on an Olson 25, 3 Ring Circus.  She enjoys spending time at their cabin in the Gorge. She has worked in the legal field for over 11 years as a legal secretary.

Directors, Two-Year Term:

Derek DeCouteau.  Derek, in 1976, having never sailed, bought a Star class boat at the newly formed CYC of Tacoma.   Racing naturally followed.  He sailed in the U.W. program during college and has competed in U.S. Sailing’s Mallory Cup.  Currently, Derek races his Star in Seattle and Olympia and crews on a J-24.   While one design racing is his favorite, he can be found racing PHRF to balance out the schedule.  The sailing community has been very helpful over the years and Derek would like to contribute back to the quality program at CYC.

 Michele Rogalin.  Michele learned port from starboard sailing the waters of Long Island Sound with her father, and later raced catamarans on the east end of Long Island while in college.  Michele moved to Seattle shortly thereafter, but did not return to sailing until 2007. She has since raced with various one-design and PHRF fleets and has plans for an extended cruising adventure in the future. Michele joined CYC at the end of 2011 and has taken an active role in promoting Club events and activities through social media, supporting the Friday night ‘happy hours’, and developing a volunteer base for the bar program. Michele is strongly committed to expanding the membership at CYC and creating opportunities for members to enjoy supporting their Club.

Kirk Utter.   Kirk joined CYC this year with intention of getting involved in the Club.  He has grown up cruising and racing on Puget Sound.  In the 1960’s and early 1970’s, Kirk cruised the San Juan Islands, Gulf Islands, and Desolation Sound with his parents in the summers.  He has raced Star boats and a variety of bigger boats in many races both locally and nationally over many years.  Currently Kirk is racing and living on his boat, a one off 30’ from Don Martin. He has lived aboard at Shilshole Bay Marina for the last 11 years and is a board member of the Shilshole Bay Live Aboard Association.  When not sailing Kirk is busy cheering on his daughter who is on the sailing team at the University of Washington or cheering on his son who is a junior at Roosevelt High School and plays basketball 24/7.

 Continuing Directors:  Sunny Fenton, Nojan Moshiri and Derek Vranizan.  Current Commodore Kenneth Johnson becomes Junior Staff Commodore and a member of the Board.
