Fridays In February Program Set
6:00 Social with No Host Bar and light appetizers 7:00 Program begins and runs until 9:00 with a 15 minute break midway CYC Clubhouse North End of Shilshole Marina, Seattle, Washington Friday February 3, 2012 Cruising in Northern Europe Tom and Kristin FergusonTom and Kristin Ferguson share stories and photographs from 1990, 2009 and 2011 voyages in their 50’ cutter, Arwen Evenstar. Those cruising seasons found the Fergusons and guests in the British Isles, Ireland and Scotland and Continental Europe from northern France through the North Sea countries and into the Baltic. Their talk touches on sailing (weather, shallows) challenges and infrequently visited destinations such as the Isle of Man, the Scilly Islands off Cornwall, the Channel Islands and the Dutch and German Friesen Islands featured in Riddle of the Sands.
Friday February 10, 2012 Four Year Circumnavigation via Cape of Good Hope and Cape Horn Ginger NiemannGinger and Peter Niemann bought a neglected 47′ schooner, rerigged her as a sloop, sold the house and left Seattle in 2006 for a west about circumnavigation. Their travels took them via the Cape of Good Hope and Cape Horn on a mostly drama free four year voyage, visiting out of the way places such as Madagascar and Uruguay. The people they met along the way made every mile of travel worthwhile. Ginger will present some of the highlights of their trip.
Friday February 17, 2012 Seattle to Glacier Bay, Alaska and Back With One Year Old Twins Tor and Jessica BjorklundThis past summer Tor and Jessica Bjorklund sailed their homebuilt gaff rigged 32′ steel ketch north to Alaska. As crew they had along their twin boys Lars and Odin, departing just a few days after the boys’ first birthday. 2,700 miles and four months later a great many lessons were learned. They will share some tips for travelling with toddlers, magic anchorages along the way, finding block ice and Laundromats, insights on weather, anchoring in fjords and navigating in ice fields. Even a bit on building the boat. They’ve taken the minimalist approach (no refrigeration, no pressure or hot water, manual windlass, and few electronics) and are eager to communicate why you shouldn’t hesitate to go now, with the boat you have, and the gear you have aboard.
Friday February 24, 2012 Seattle to New Zealand, Cruising the South Pacific With Kids The Malone’s – Scott, Mary and The BoysIn 2008, The Malone family bought a well traveled Tartan 37, Whisper, and with their 6 and 9 year old sons Finn and Timothy, headed south for warmer waters. They will share pictures and experiences during a magical two years exploring Mexico, South Pacific, and New Zealand with kids. To make their budget work, they down sized to a smaller boat and went without much of the typical cruising gear. They will talk about the choices they made, what gear was considered essential, and what would be high on their list for next time. Scott will also talk about how you get the boat back home once you are in New Zealand, and share stories on why sailing home alone is definitely the hard way.
Unfortunately Joel and Mary Thornton’s talk, Cruising the Canals of Southern France, has had to be postponed due to scheduling uncertainties. We apologize for any inconvenience.
