Job Description: Volunteer Youth Sailing Instructor Intern

Overview

The Club sponsors weekly sailing camps for youths from 6 to 14, with all classes using Club-owned Optimist dinghies. These camps generally are oriented to beginner and intermediate levels although some camps may be designated for youths interested in an introduction to sailboat racing.   In addition, the Club has an introductory 2-hour class held once a week for youths from 4 to 6 (the “Guppy” program).

The Youth Sailing Instructor Internship position permits a young person interested in gaining experience as a youth sailing instructor and in becoming certified as a US Sailing Instructor. The Intern works closely with the Club’s Youth Sailing Instructors on a daily basis.  As with the Instructors, the Intern must be friendly and courteous, be enthusiastic about the sport of sailing and seek to expose students to the fundamentals of sailing and the objectives of the Club’s youth sailing program:  safety, fun and learning.

Qualifications and Certifications

  • Be interested in obtaining a U.S. Sailing Level 1 Small Boat Instructor certification and appropriate First Aid and CPR certifications
  • Have a passion for sailing and working with kids
  • Have a positive, enthusiastic and flexible attitude
  • Be at least 14 years old by June 24, 2013

Primary Responsibilities

  • Arrive and be ready to begin work at the scheduled time, dressed in appropriate attire
  • Work in a team with Sailing Instructors with a particular lesson group (Guppies, beginners and intermediate sailing levels)
  • Understand and perform the lesson plans for each day and camp, including proactive activities when the weather does not permit on-the-water sailing
  • Work with the Instructors in conducting all landside and on-the-water aspects of the conduct of their classes, including wearing of life jackets, conduct on the floats, the preparation, rigging and launching of the boats, and insuring that the boats are in a safe, working condition
  • Meet with Instructors at the end of the day to review the day, discuss pertinent issues and plan and prepare for the next day
  • Perform additional tasks to assist in the outreach of the Club and the youth sailing program as requested by the Head Instructor or the Club

 Other Matters

This is an unpaid volunteer position.  The sailing camps run from 10 am to 4 pm each day, although instructors are expected to be at the Club from before 9 am to at least 5 pm to allow parents to drop-off and pick-up students.  The Guppy program generally runs from 5 pm to 7 pm each Wednesday.
No paid vacation or other benefits.  Time-off for family matters and personal sailing regattas to be arranged at least one-week in advance with Head Instructor.
Sailing camps start on June 24 and run through August 23  (depending on demand, additional camps may be scheduled).
