The Leukemia Cup Regatta is both a race and a fund raising competition. Sailors participating in the Regatta are encouraged to collect contributions to help support leukemia research and programs. Last year, Seattle’s Leukemia Cup attracted 58 boats and raised $20,000. Congratulations to last year’s top 3 fund raising boats: Charisma, Choices III and Slick. Great Job! This year, we’ve set a goal to raise $30,000. Please join us in reaching this goal!
EVENT HISTORY
In 1993, with the help of noted sailing expert and ESPN commentator Gary Jobson, the Maryland Yacht Club hosted the first Leukemia Cup Regatta. Enthusiasm for the event spread across the country into other LSA chapters including Washington State. The Corinthian Yacht Club on Shilshole Bay hosted Seattle’s first Leukemia Cup in 1995. Currently, 30 Leukemia Cup Regattas are scheduled nationwide.
WHAT IS LEUKEMIA?
Leukemia is a malignant disease which affects the blood forming tissues and organs, mainly the bone marrow and spleen. Leukemia is the number one disease killer of children, yet for every child diagnosed, there are ten adults facing this disease. Thanks to advances in research, the overall survival rates have doubled in the last 30 years.
ABOUT THE LEUKMIA SOCIETY
The Leukemia Society of America is a national voluntary health agency dedicated to curing leukemia and its related cancers - lymphoma, multiple myeloma and Hodgkin’s disease - and to improving the quality of life of patients and their families. Supported entirely by public contributions, the Leukemia Society of America supports five major programs: research, patient aid, public and professional education and community service. For more information on leukemia, and/or the Society’s programs, please call (206) 628-0777.
