Commodore-Gibson Race/Cruise 2006

August 12-13, 2006

Pictures will be posted shortly

The races are nominally between Meadow Point and Foul Weather Bluff, but if there is not enough wind to sail, we have the option of trying starts at Apple Cove Point or Point No Point. Both days had decent winds for sailing, and we did the full distance. Saturday all the starters finished under sail. Sunday there was a pretty strong adverse tide, but the four flying sails boats all finished within sight of each other, and the non-flying sails boats enjoyed the cruise, also finishing the race. The races are started with a "reverse start" in which the handicap is applied at the beginning, so if everybody sailed exactly to his handicap all boats would finish simultaneously. Saturday there was a close race between Jubilee and Outlaw and Sunday the first three finsihers finished within 5 minutes. Bluefin took the "cruise-race" title to heart on Sunday and decided to enjoy the day with a side trip into Port Madison.

We stay overnight at Port Ludlow, and had a terrific potluck on the dock. Usually we get more cruisers along with the racers, but this year the participants were all pretty regular racers, who also happen to enjoy a good cruise. Of course Jamie Thomas is a regular racer, but does not usually race her home, as she did this weekend. Cindy Gossett had prizes for all participants, which she awarded after dinner.
