May, 2009
The CYC Board of Directors on Monday May 11 unanimously approved a resolution recognizing two employees and one member for the heroic rescue of three Thistle sailors pitched into Lake Washington during a squall.
Mark Prentice and his crew on Thistle 3802 were beginning to feel the effects of hypothermia after their boat pitchpoled and was drifting toward the I-90 bridge on April 22. Fellow Thistler Rusty Lhamon came to their assistance, as did CYC Whaler Driver Brian Coleman, under the direction of Principal Race Officer Kevin Cunningham.
The three will be honored, and copies of the resolution will be presented to each, at the CYC Board meeting on June 8.
The resolution reads:
Whereas, Thistle 3802 capsized in a puff estimated at 30 knots while racing in CYC's Wednesday night Spring Series on April 22, 2009, and
Whereas, skipper Mark Prentice and his two crewmembers were pitched into the chilly waters of Lake Washington, were unable to right their boat, and were beginning to suffer the effects of hypothermia, and
Whereas, fellow Thistler Rusty Lhamon and his crew came to the assistance of Thistle 3802 and helped the cold crewmembers out of the water, and
Whereas, CYC Whaler driver Brian Coleman, under the direction of PRO Kevin Cunningham, also came to the aid of Thistle 3802, skillfully helping the crewmembers into his Whaler and safely towing the Thistle to shore.
Now Therefore Be It Resolved, that the Corinthian Yacht Club Board of Directors unanimously expresses its thanks and admiration for the seamanlike and heroic actions of Lhamon, Coleman and Cunningham, and
Be it Further Resolved, that copies of this resolution, dated and signed by the commodore of Corinthian Yacht Club, be presented to Lhamon, Coleman and Cunningham in recognition of their actions.
