CYC's Inaugural Family Event was a Big Success

June 20, 2009

Saturday June 20 turned out to be a picture perfect day for young CYC sailors to try out something new and exciting at Sail Sand Point.

With the help of a few seasoned salts, ten families including their protégés enjoyed a warm sunny afternoon with a moderate breeze in front of the Sail Sand Point facility. We launched 10 Optis and a couple of double-handed boats to let our young sailors have a go at driving their own vessels.

Cennames in Opti

Five-year-old Ellie Cenname and her dad, Michael, cruised in an Optimist dinghy at Sail Sand Point.

Five-year-old Ellie Cenname was quite relaxed at the helm even when she was coming straight into the wharf at 4 knots. Ellie was able to discuss a number of topics while driving including her wardrobe of pink "bikini" pants and matching rash guard, not to mention her pink life jacket. We look forward to her future sailing and wardrobe endeavors.

Five-year-old Alex Lipson, grandson of past commodore Martin Selig, was a very confident young man, after as he put it, "I had a little time getting used to it. It wasn't quite so scary after all."

Eleven-year-old Emma and nine-year-old Ian Nagle were naturals. Emma was wondering why I kept sailing up on her transom all the time. When I said I was trying to pass her but couldn't, she very politely stopped her boat and allowed me to pass. Thank you Emma. She soon figured out what was going on and proceeded to track me down mercilessly. I was no match for her blazing speed.

Thank You Michael Cenname and Ann Brockenbrough in all your efforts for putting this event together. Chef Andi Pistay for her artistry on the grill and fine BBQ after.

Thank you "Seasoned Salts" Jonathan and Marcie Edwards for helping to keep most sailors in their boats. They tried with Brian Nagle but truth be told their efforts lapsed. Something about a 6'3" man in a 4' X 7' boat. Practice, practice, practice. Brian soon got the hang of it. "Just don't sit down unless you absolutely have to and then just stay on your knees and DUCK!". Good job Brian !! A new Opti sailor is made !!
