New Heads Add Comfort on Committee Boats;
Repairs Also Planned on Non-Functioning Stove

October, 2009

CYC race staff members and volunteers will be a little bit more comfortable on Lake Washington and Puget Sound thanks to Philip Wise and Sands Marine of Seattle.

Wise, a 15-year employee of the marine systems installer and an associate member of CYC, over the last few months installed – for cost — new heads, plumbing and holding tanks on the club's two committee boats, YC V on the Sound and YC VI on the Lake.

"Charlie Rathkopf came to me one day and said, 'What can you do about this stinking head?,'" said Wise, referring to CYC's Sound principal race officer and the head on YC V. "And later, someone suggested that we install one on YC VI, which didn't have a head at all."

The old head on YC V was plumbed to a metal tank that Wise suspects had been leaking, sometimes causing unpleasant odors. He built a platform in the head compartment of the boat to make using it easier and to hold the new plastic holding tank.

Installation was easier on the lake boat, which already had a platform and space for the tank.

"We did it to support the club and the people," Wise said. He also is plans to fix the diesel-fueled heating stove on YC V, which hasn't functioned in many years, providing a warm cabin in the colder months.
