Craig Horsfield, a South African transplant to Seattle and lifelong sailor, is directing his passion for sailing at a new target - sailing alone across the Atlantic in a 21 foot boat.
CYC member Horsfield already has competed in three races in Europe this year in his boat, the Skyweb Express, qualifying him to race in this year's Mini Transat Race from Charenete Maritime, France, to Bahia, Brazil, beginning on Sept. 13.
He will give a slide talk on his racing program on Friday, June 5, beginning at 7 p.m. at the CYC Shilshole clubhouse. The bar will open at 6:30.
As a youth, he sailed Dabchicks and Hobies in South Africa (Cape Town) and later sailed in the Cape to Rio Race as a bowman. Horsfield owned and raced the Olson 30 Wild Turkey in Seattle and was 4th and 2nd in consecutive nationals.
Has been sailing his Mini in Seattle the last couple years, preparing it and doing his qualifier and a West Coast Race for Minis (only one other boat in it) last year.
Horsfield shipped the boat to Spain over the winter. So far he has finished three races in Europe, the Mini Med 500 (in which he was joined by Kurt Hoehne), the Mini Select and the Pavois. He has officially qualified for the Transat.
The Skyweb Express is a Mini Zero type, designed by Marc Lombard.
