On August 15 and 16, the CYC Team Racing Program competed in its first regatta, the McCurdy Cup. Everyone had a blast! Two Days. 84 Races. Sun. Wind. Excellent Spectating. Food. Great competition. Top 10 Finishes. Since April, the CYC participants have been meeting both on and off the water to learn about team racing and to hone their skills. This is the program's first year, and the growth and enthusiasm enabled CYC to field two of the 14 teams for this 3-on-3 regatta.
Team CYC
The McCurdy Cup is run annually by SYC. This year Ben Glass, the PRO, did a fantastic job including both juniors and masters divisions. Ben thought only 9 teams were coming, but on Saturday morning when 14 teams showed up, he was quick to adjust the plan and added everyone to the rotation - boosting the number of required races for a single round robin from 36 to 91! 84 of the targeted races were sailed using 18 boats (2 sets of six FJ's and six V15's).
Conditions for the weekend were excellent for August - a time of year when it is not uncommon to have no wind at all during the day. In fact, there was reasonable wind throughout the regatta with only a few short delays due to shifts or lulls. The standard team racing "digital N" course was set up close to the pier, making it easy for teams to rotate boats and giving everyone a great view of the course.
Our two teams finished in 6th and 9th place overall (4th and 6th in the masters division). While we didn't win, we met our goal of building momentum for team racing within the club, and we recruited some new members along the way.
The next regatta for Team CYC is at Orcas Island on September 19th and 20th. More information about the team racing program.
