NOOD: Racing in the Hurricane

These 29er skiffs and other dinghies and small keelboats were forced to race in the so-called "Meadow Point Hurricane" because of a lack of wind elsewhere near Shilshole on May 17, the third and final day of the Sperry Top-Sider NOOD Regatta. Light air was the story of the regatta, which saw no wind and no racing on Saturday and limited racing on Friday.

Lasers Raced Sunday in the 'Meadow Point Hurricane'

Two hundred and fourteen boats, great food and new friends. Proving there was wind somewhere, the mini 12's sailed 12 races in Lake Union over Saturday and Sunday - as I understand it they even tied up to a barge for a two hour break for lunch on Sunday - hiking must really be hard work on those boats!

The overall winner for the regatta, selected by Sailing World, was Dan Kaseler, he came from behind in the fleet standings by winning the last race - congratulations and good luck in the BVI in November.

There was major disappointment for two fleets that need a little more wind to get going. Even though Sunday races were sailed in the area of the meadow point hurricane, even this was not enough to get the I-14's and the moths out!

All in all a great regatta that could have used wind a little earlier Saturday and Sunday. CYC and SYC look forward to next years event which will be at the same time and same venue!! The organizing committee's will attempt to work with the wind gods to see if they can participate.
