Improved Food Expected to Draw Sailors into NOOD Tent

May 15-17, 2009

More than 200 boats were signed up early this week for the Seattle NOOD regatta, and organizers were hoping that late entries, common in Seattle, would bring the regatta up to the numbers of the inaugural event in 2008.

Regatta Director George Brengle of Sailing World Magazine said he hopes the food will be a major draw to the tent this year. A new caterer, Jasper's Barbecue, will serve all-you-can-eat beef brisket, chicken, pork and ribs Friday night and barbecued smoked salmon and steak tips salad Saturday.

"The food will be much improved this year," Brengle said.

The on-shore activities at Shilshole also will feature a bigger tent, replacing last year's often-crowded one, and an outdoor area.

The venerable 6-Metre fleet, shown here in last year's NOOD regatta, will join the event again this year.

Sperry Top-sider, the principal sponsor of this year's NOOD regattas, will put up what Brengle described as "a great new exhibit," called the "Beach Cottage."

"They've gone to a great deal of effort and have made a big investment in this to display their product," Brengle said. Other sponsors include Mount Gay Rum and Heineken U.S.A.

The regatta will run Friday, Saturday and Sunday on three circles, two managed by CYC and the third by Seattle Yacht Club.

Last year, NOOD drew 231 boats in 24 fleets, including sailors from as far as New Mexico. While the number of boats this year isn't up to that level, the number of fleets, at 29, already has exceeded last year's total.

"Considering the economy, I think we're doing very well," Brengle said.

He said warm, sunny weather is predicted for the weekend.
