March 2010
The 2010 sailing season is off to a good start, and the CYC Team Racing program is gearing up for its second year. Team racing (which is to normal racing what three dimensional chess is to checkers) is a thrilling form of sailboat racing where one team of three boats is set against an opposing team of three boats in a short course battle for the lowest total combined finishing score. Team racers use all of the rules to create an advantage, and going fast is not always the way to win.
This year there are many opportunities to participate in team racing events both here in Seattle and around the country. The season will be kicking off with practices at Sail Sand Point which start on Sunday, March 21.

Later in the spring, we will continue our monthly team racing lectures and tactic discussions at the CYC club house.
Major local regattas for the year will be:
•Team Race PCC’s (Pacific Coast Championships) – June 12-13 on Lake Union
• McCurdy Trophy Team Race Regatta – August 28-29 at Sail Sand Point - Lake Washington
• Orcas Island Open Team Race – TBD (mid September) – Orcas Island
• US National Team Race Championship (Hinman Trophy) – October 1-3 on Lake Union
The CYC team racing team may not qualify for the Hinman Trophy, but you can be sure there will be a strong contingent out to watch these action packed 10 minute races as the nation’s best sailors put their skills to the test. After another full season of expanding our understanding of what team racing is truly all about, the CYC team racers will certainly appreciate it when someone is “given the banana,” or “passed back,” or “play two’d” right out of the lead!
If this type of racing sounds interesting to you, check out the CYC Team Racing information. We hope to see you out on the water soon.
