March 2010
The CYC Board of Directors voted at its March 8 meeting to revise its rental policies for the Shilshole Clubhouse.
Under the new policy, other yacht clubs, with the exception of Seattle Yacht Club, must pay full rental rates for the club, unless the rental is for a charity event. In the case of charity events, other clubs will be given a discount and will pay the equivalent of what CYC members pay to rent the clubhouse.
The board left in place discounted rates established last year for Seattle Yacht Club, which uses the CYC clubhouse for social events after many of its Puget Sound races. SYC pays the CYC member rate for the clubhouse.
The board’s votes to tighten rental policies have been made to recognize the value of the clubhouse to CYC and the sailing community.
The March 8 discussion of the policy clarification was prompted by a request by Shilshole Bay Yacht Club to use the CYC clubhouse for its annual charity event, the Trans Puget Regatta. The beneficiary of the regatta is Sound Experience, an educational organization that operates the schooner Adventuress.
CYC has traditionally given the clubhouse to SBYC for the event for free, and SBYC donates its regatta profit to Sound Experience. The donation, coincidentally, has usually amounted to just about what the rental would have been if SBYC had been charged for the clubhouse..
Commodore John Rahn proposed the new policy, which would require SBYC to pay the member rate if it decides to proceed with the rental.
Daily rental rates for the club are: Monday through Thursday, non-members, $700, members $400; Friday and Sunday, non-members $950, members, $600; and Saturday, non-members, $1,250 and members $900.
