Board Report: We Need Volunteer Help and Ideas
February 8, 2010
By Ken Johnson
Volunteers are wanted:
- To help maintain and repair the Shilshole Clubhouse. Director James Frazier has a list of "to do" projects. See "Clubhouse Projects." Let him or the Office know if you can help out on any of these projects.
- To help out on a Sponsorship Committee to find sponsors (i.e., contributions in exchange for recognition) for the Club's major racing events. Contact Director Darrin Towe or the Office if you have marketing experience and/or would just like to help raise revenue (and keep dues lower).
Ideas are wanted for Leschi:
- Treasurer Remmert Wolters is leading the long-range planning committee's review of options for Leschi. First up is to explore possible partnerships for space at or near Leschi (CYC uses the Lake for less than 50 times a year, and this poses difficult problems to justify sole use of a facility). Our former Leschi clubhouse area is now being used by an exercise club. Brainstorm, and present any suggestion, however off-the wall, to Remmert or the Office.
Other Board and Club Action:
- February is the time to join CYC. The Board authorized the traditional $100 off the membership initiation fee for any member joining in February, whether or not at the Open House.
- The Board authorized financial support to the Thistle Fleet for the David Dellenbaugh visit on May 7 and 8 and to the J24 Fleet for the J24 North Americans on May 21 - 23.
- Race Books (Jerry Diercks) should arrive shortly to be followed by a new Helsman (Bruce Sherman).
- The Club will keep its current "fifth" whaler as a back-up just so no racing would be adversely impacted by any failure of the current four whalers (2 on the Lake and 2 on the Sound); CYC will wait to purchase and install an extra winch, however, until the Club's financial picture is clearer.
- We are repairing leaks around the windows on the first floor, south-east corner, by the entrance, insuring that the anode protection system is working properly (the Clubhouse is a vessel, after all) and getting bids for the roof repair.
- The Club's management has interviewed finalists for the Assistant Club Manager position and the new assistant manager should be on board shortly.
- Charlie Macaulay is the Club's new representative to the PHRF Northwest Board - contact Charlie if you have any issues with PHRF other than ratings!
- The Board named the table in the south-west corner of the Shilshole as the "Wayne Berge Boss" table in honor of Wayne's over 50 years of sailing, his 80th birthday, his impending "retirement" from racing and his enthusiasm, enjoyment and encouragement of sailing.
- Commodore John Rahn is meeting with Seattle Yacht Club representatives to explore a closer working relationship between the two clubs and is continuing discussions with The Sailing Foundation for areas of mutual interest and benefit.
Upcoming Events
- Get New Members now - $100 off the membership initiation fee for February members!
- David Dellenbaugh visit - David will speak to the public at the Museum of History and Industry on Friday, May 7; admission will be a suggested $10 donation to the Sailing Foundation. On May 8, he will talk Thistles and Racing at Leschi, with on-land and on-the-water training. Sailors from other fleets - J24s, San Juan 24s, Snipes, T-Birds et al are welcome (and spare Thistles may be available for sailing).
