Teams from Five Nations Will Be In Seattle for J/24 North Americans

May 19-23, 2010

Final preparations are underway for the J/24 North American Championship regatta, to be hosted by Corinthian Yacht Club of Seattle May 19 - 23. Thirty-three teams have signed up for the event so far, from countries including the United States, Canada, Japan, the Dominican Republic and Argentina.

Regatta chair Joy Okazaki said the Japanese crew was to arrive in Seattle this week to begin practicing. The Dominican Republic contingent includes two teams that are using the Seattle event as a warm-up for the Central American Games.

Hans Spiller's J/24, And Your Little Dog Too, will be among the competitors at the upcoming North American Championship regatta.

"The great thing about this regatta is that there has been so much international interest," Okazaki said. "We also will have a strong showing from the local Seattle Fleet, with 18 teams."

Because the regatta is a "continental event" under International J/24 Class Association rules, the team of race officials also will have an international flavor. The Principal Race Officer Paul Ulibarri hails from Victoria, B.C., and judges are coming from Japan, Venezuela, Canada and the United States.

Bitburger, one of Germany's largest brewers, which wants to expand its U.S. market share, is the title sponsor of the regatta. Other sponsors include Fat Bastard wine, Kvichak Marine Industries, Northwest Yachting Magazine, Quantum Sails, Cheap Diver, Shilshole Bay Marina, Skyweb Express, Harken, Team McLube, North Sails, Web 1 Marketing, Seattle Yacht Club and CSR Marine.
