Replacing Shilshole Roof Presents A Unique Set of Challenges

By James Frazier
CYC Facilities Chair

After many years of stellar service, the roof on the Shilshole Clubhouse is starting to show her age, much like me and some of my fellow members, but that's a different story. In an effort to keep the facility in tip-top shape and preserve the Clubhouse for future generations of sailors, The Board has solicited bids from local roofing contractors to have the roof replaced.

CYC Facilities Chair Jim Frazier, in the photo, said multiple layers of shingles on slanted surfaces add thousands of pounds to the CYC roof.

As simple as this might sound, it turns out that replacing a roof on what is essentially a floating barge, rather than a building on dry land has it's own unique set of challenges, partially including: licensing, roof access for removal of the old material, roof access for the new material, safety (workers are required to wear harnesses for this type of installation) and scheduling the work around an active facility that hosts a multitude of events beyond the regular racing programs.

After reviewing multiple bids, Jorve Roofing has been selected as the contractor. Jorve's approach to the project and willingness to partner with CYC in this endeavor made them stand out as a clear winner in the bidding process. Jorve will remove the multiple layers of shingles that have been added over the years and replace them with a heavy duty high wind rated shingle layer on the sloped roof surfaces. They will also apply a new high tech industrial grade membrane covering over the flat sections of the roof, while replacing the metal roof cap and flashing.

So don't be surprised if you see a little extra activity around the Shilshole Clubhouse as the old roof is removed and the new one installed. The entire project should only take about a week. We are still finalizing the exact start date, but it is expected to get underway in the next couple of weeks. This will not affect rental activity or normal Club operations, but things may be a little noisy up on the roof during one of the upcoming Monday lunches.
