Monday Lunch



Monday Lunch is held every Monday at the Shilshole clubhouse. We gather between 11:30 and 12:00. The bar is open and a hot lunch is served. The cost is $17. Although the official end of the program is at 13:00, often our speakers continue awhile longer.

At this time we have no speakers scheduled beyond March 21, and there are some open days before then. All members are encouraged to recruit speakers. David Blakemore and Herb Holley will do the scheduling and maintain the calendar.

Morgan CollinsExecutive Director, Sail Sand Point. Morgan will give us a report on the current activities at Sail Sand Point, some of the challenges and opportunities they face, as well as present and possible future areas of cooperation with CYC.

Gina Congiusta, Gretchen's Shoebox Catering. Gina is Sales Manager for Gretchen's Shoebox, the catering company from which we have ordered our lunch one or two times each month since last October. She will bring an array of items for our lunch, and will talk about some of the challenges and rewards of operating a large-scale catering business.

John Vynne. John is the son of June and Sunny Vynne. Among his many sailing-related activities he has had a long association with the Seattle Sailing Foundation. He will talk about the Foundation, its programs, and its relationship with other sailing organizations in the Puget Sound Region.

Jim Frazier, CYC Director and Fleet Captain, Thunderbird Fleet. Jim will talk about the Thunderbird class, the Seattle fleet, its racing program and its other activities.


January 17

Jonathan Flack, CYC Board Member. Jonathan is the CYC board member responsible for the club's Junior Sailing program. The board views this program as vital to the club's future, with Jonathan leading its implementation. He will give us details on what is planned for 2011 and ideas on how Monday Lunch members can be helpful.


January 10, 2011

Dave Rigby, Marine Plumbing Specialist. Bob Miller recommended Dave Rigby as a speaker. Dave has done work on Bob's boat on several occasions, always to a good result. Dave's topic will be "Secrets to a Sweet Smelling Head." He will give a short talk and then answer any and all questions on the subject.

Herring and Aquavit Lunch.

The planning discussion which was originally scheduled for 11/29 was not held that date due to speaker rescheduling caused by the November snowstorm.

Following lunch we will have a discussion on plans for Monday Lunch in 2011. Four topics will be covered, and perhaps others as may arise.

  1. Financial report for 2010.
  2. Experience to date with food service alternatives now that we no longer have a cook.
  3. How do we continue our speaker program following the retirement of David B. from that responsibility.
  4. Ideas for increasing Monday Lunch attendance.

December 13

Paul Bieker, America's Cup Yacht Designer. Paul was our speaker on two occasions on the subject of the most recent America's Cup competition. This time he will talk about the next campaign. Golden Gate Yacht Club will defend the cup, with details still in the process of being organized.


December 6

Brian Watkins. Brian is a CYC member and highly accomplished racer with his Express 37, "Declaration of Independence." He will talk about his experiences in organizing a successful sailboat racing campaign on Puget Sound.


November 29

Planning Discussion. On this date we will discuss (1) our experience with food service, (2) plans for continuing our speaker program into 2011, and (3) ideas for increasing attendance at Monday Lunch.


November 22

Dale Mobius, Seattle Office, Veterans Administration. Dale will give us an introductory course in veterans benefits, who qualifies for which ones, and how to go about qualifying. This is a rescheduling of the program from October 18.


November 15

Riley Jones, Duwamish River Cleanup Coalition. Riley will discuss the history, current activities, and future plans for cleaning up the lower Duwamish River, a major Superfund site.


November 8

Jack Christiansen, North Sails. Jack is a long time CYC member, and past Board member, who operates the North Sails loft in Seattle. He will talk about the latest in sail materials and design.


November 1

John Adams & John Rehberg, Seattle General Agency. A conversation on the subject of yacht insurance. John Adams has twice in past elections run for WA State Insurance Commissioner.


October 30 (Saturday)

When: Saturday, October 30, 2010, 5PM - 9PM.
Where: CYC Shilshole clubhouse
Who: Monday Lunchers, guests, all other CYC members.
What: Potluck dinner. A main dish of ham and chicken will be provided by the Monday Lunch treasury. Attendees to bring an appetizer, salad, side dish, or dessert. Beverages are BYOB. The club's bar will not be open.
The concept is an event similar to the evenings we have had in past years on a raft of boats at our rendezvous in Port Madison or in Port Blakely, but this time at our clubhouse. I will bring the official CYC booklet of sea chanties.

Tammy Allen, Harbormaster, Bainbridge Island. Tammy has been our speaker annually for the past several years, bringing us up to date on developments at the harbors and marinas on Bainbridge Island. This time she will have a special topic–her time spent this summer helping deal with the consequences of the Gulf oil spill.

John Rahn, CYC Commodore. John will describe the major issues on CYC's agenda for the balance of 2010 and on into 2011, the important decisions under review by the board, and challenges in implementing those decisions.


October 4

Rich Hazelton, Editor, 48 North. Rich has been our speaker every 12 - 18 months for many years. He will bring us up to date on the sailing world as he sees it from his magazine's editorial chair.


September 27

Chris Tutmark, Racing Sailor and CYC Member. Chris will talk about competing in this year's Mini Transat race, along with some of his other ocean racing experiences.


September 20

Mark Shrader,Skipper, Ocean Watch and the Around the Americas Campaign. Mark was our speaker in May 2009, shortly before the 64-foot cutter "Ocean Watch" sailed on her circumnavigation of North and South America. That voyage was completed successfully on June 17 of this year. Mark will tell us about some of the highlights and lowlights of this historic trip.


September 13

John Kelly, CYC S1 Member. John joined CYC in January 1946. He will talk about his years as a CYC member, in particular the decision to build the present Shilshole clubhouse and the implementation of that decision.


August 23

Keith Whittimore, Kvichak Marine. Kvichak Marine has been an important supplier of skimmer boats in the cleanup after the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Keith will speak about “The Gulf Oil Spill from the Perspective of Ballard.”.


August 16

Bob Senter, Lugger Marine Engines. Bob Senter's company is a manufacturer of marine diesel engines. He was our speaker in May of this year, and at the end of his talk we agreed that later in the summer we would make a field trip to Lugger Marine's facility in Ballard to see their operations. On this date we will have lunch at CYC and then car pool to Lugger Marine.


August 2

David Carpenter, Ballard Locks. David is Navigation Facilities Supervisor at the Ballard Locks. He will talk about operations, adventures, and misadventures that he has seen over the years.


July 26

Dave Reid, Sail Transport Company. Sail Transport Company delivers locally grown fresh fruits and vegetables from Sequim to Seattle, under sail. Dave will give us the details of his company and its operations.


July 19

Brian Ledbetter, Seattle Racing Sailor. Brian has recently sailed in the Newport-Bermuda Race. He will talk about this experience among others at various regattas in recent years.

Dalton Bergin, SYC Member. Dalton is a racing sailor known to many CYC members. He is, in the words of Bill Buchan, "... one of the best young sailors in the world." He will talk about his racing activities.


June 21

Steve Wilen, Author and Classic Yacht Association member. Steve is the author of Knee Deep in Shavings, a biography of boat designer and builder Norm Blanchard. Steve will be in Seattle over the Father's Day weekend for a rendevous of the Classic Yacht Association (CYA) and will come to lunch on Monday to talk about Norm Blanchard and also about CYA.


June 14

Christine Scott, SmartPlug, Inc. Christine is Marketing Director of SmartPlug, a company that specializes in electrical systems for marine applications. She will tell us about her company and its work.


June 7

Matt Pollitz, X-Ray Auto. Matt will discuss the conversion of older model Volvo automobiles to electric power.


May 24

Bob Senter, Lugger Marine Engines. Bob Senter's company is a manufacturer of marine diesel engines. On this day we will have lunch at CYC and after lunch make a field trip to Lugger Marine's facility in Ballard to learn the "Fundamentals of Advanced Marine Diesel Engines."


May 17

Fred Roswold, Long-Time Offshore Cruiser and CYC Member. Fred and his wife Judy have cruised the world for more than 15 years on their 43-foot sloop "Wings." They are past recipients of CYC's Greig Memorial Trophy, our Cruising Boat of the Year award. Fred's topic will be "Cruising is More Fun if You Like to Sail (CYC Members Make Good Cruisers)."

Sharon Briggs, Manager, Recreational Boating, Port of Seattle. Sharon has been our speaker on several occasions in recent years. She always gives us an update on important developments at Shilshole Marina and on other relevant subjects, and will do so again this year.

John Rahn, CYC Commodore. John will tell us about some interesting new developments at CYC.

Curt Ebbesmeyer Author and Marine Scientist. Curt is the recently published author of Floatsametrics and the Floating World. He has a PhD in Oceanography and is an acknowledged authority on the current state of our world's oceans.


April 19

Kurt Hoehne, Marine Journalist, CYC Member and Past Board Member. Kurt will talk about sailing in the Mini Transat race and more generally about the growth of single handed sailing and racing.


April 12

Fred Pot, CYC Member and Past Board Member. Fred is now applying his expertise in GPS technology to railroad operations. He will describe some of his current activities in "working on the railroad."


April 5

Jeff June, Northwest Straits Initiative. Jeff's organization has made significant progress towards ridding Puget Sound and the Straits of derelict fishing nets, crab pots, and other fishing gear. He will tell us about recent developments and plans for further work.


March 29

John Ellis, Seattle Mariners Chairman Emeritus & CYC Staff Commodore. John will be back at the beginning of the new baseball season to talk about the Mariners and what we can hope to see from our team in 2010.


March 22

Chuck Sanborn, CYC Staff Commodore. Chuck will show a video of the northern Norwegian coast, produced from pictures taken on a cruise from Bergen to the Norway-Russia border and return.


March 15

George Lowe, Author. George is a past CYC member, is one of the early owners and campaigners of a T-Bird, and subsequently owned a Cal-40. George has written the book Tramper which a number of us have read and enjoyed. He will talk with us about whatever happens to be on his mind.


March 8

Paul Bieker, America's Cup Yacht Designer. Paul was our speaker two years ago at the early stages of his work in designing a boat for the Oracle BMW team which won the America's Cup competition in Spain last month. Paul will give us a reprise of this project that had such a successful conclusion.

Steve Travis, CYC Member. Steve is the owner of "Flash" and is a long-time CYC member with a distinguished racing career. A team of sailors led by Steve participated this past summer in the Cowes Week regatta off the Isle of Wight. He will tell us all about it.

Joel Thornton, CYC CoManager. Joel was unable to be at lunch as originally planned on October 26. He now plans to be with us on 11/9 to talk about his two years of cruising in Mexican and South Pacific Waters from 2006 - 2008.

Bryan Reeves, Pacific Science Center. Bryan is Director of the Around the Americas Project at Pacific Science Center, which is one of the primary sponsors of the endeavor. The vessel "Ocean Watch" is presently en route from Miami to San Juan, Puerto Rico, with arrival there scheduled for Sunday, November 1. Bryan will tell us about the project from the perspective of Pacific Science Center.

Joel Thornton, CYC Co-Manager. As many of us know, Joel and his wife Mary spent much of 2007 and 2008 sailing their sloop "360" along the Pacific Coast of the U.S. and Mexico, and on to Tahiti and other destinations in that part of the Pacific Ocean. Joel will tell us all about it.

Dr. Ray Jarriss, ER Physician, Swedish Hospital, Ballard. In addition to his on-going duty station at Swedish-Ballard's ER, Dr. Jarriss is Medical Director of Ocean Watch and the Around the Americas project. He will tell us about the voyage of Ocean Watch from his perspective.

Dick Wightman, the Kite Guy. One of Dick's hobbies is making bows and arrows. Another is repair and restoration of antique sewing machines. He will speak about his activities in both these areas, and other interesting work he does.

Peter Schmidt and Tom O'Brien. Peter is a founding member of CYC, and Tom is a long-time member. Both are well known to all of us. They will have a conversation about match racing and important match racing events most notable of which is America's Cup.

Tom Cashman, Foss Waterway Seaport. Tom will tell us about the plans for and the status of a new maritime museum in Tacoma.

Maury Rattray will make a presentation and show a video about sailing in the Soling class on Lake Garda in Italy. This is the venue that Joel Thornton described to us at lunch on June 15, and where Keith Whittemore and crew took second place recently in the Italian J-24 national championships.

Bob Ross. Bob joined CYC in 1983. He is the J-Boat dealer in Seattle, and the prime organizer of J-Fest. He is also a principal sponsors of Whdbey Island Race Week. Bob will talk about the history and current status of both these events, which have been held annually for 25 years.

Keith Whittemore. Keith is a long-time CYC member who is well represented on the club's Honor Roll of Champions. He is President of Kvichak Marine, a boat builder he founded 30 years ago in his garage. Last December at Monday Lunch Keith told us about his contract to build fast response boats for the U. S. Coast Guard. On this date we will take Monday Lunch on the road for a visit to Kvichak's manufacturing facility in Kent where the Coast Guard boat is built. We will have lunch at a restaurant in Southcenter. More details to follow.

Chris Winnard. Chris was CYC's 2006 Sailor of the Year. He is a sailmaker as well as an accomplished sailboat racer, and will tell us about the latest developments is sails and sail materials.

Carl Buchan. When Carl spoke at Monday Lunch this past November he touched briefly on the fact that he had built a 40-foot racing sloop that was launched earlier in 2008. At this lunch Carl will go into many of the details of the design/build process.

Mark Schrader. Mark is heading up an expedition to circumnavigate North and South American clockwise under sail. He will talk about plans for the trip, as well as some of the factors involved in organizing such an effort.

Stan Keck. Stan is the owner of "Circe," a classic 63-foot sloop that has seen much service in the Puget Sound area.

Paul LaMarche. Paul is the owner of "Neptune's Car" and "Obsession." Paul spoke to Monday Lunch a year ago about his business of chartering these two 70-footers, and also about campaigning "Neptune's Car" in races on Puget Sound. We had a Monday Lunch cruise on "Obsession" last June. "Neptune's Car" was badly damaged by a power boat in a collision toward the end of last summer. Paul will talk about the trials and tribulations of getting his boat repaired and out on the water in 2009.

Erin Blakemore. Erin is David Blakemore's granddaughter. She recently spent 6 weeks sailing on the North Atlantic as part of her college studies, and will tell us about it.

John Ellis. John has been a CYC member since joining as a Junior in 1945, the club's founding year. He is a Staff Commodore of CYC, is retired Chairman of Puget Sound Energy, and Chairman Emeritus of the Seattle Mariners. He is always an entertaining speaker, and will talk about whatever is on his mind.

Jim Medley. Jim is a long-time CYC member known to all of us from his service to the club in many capacities. He has a particular passion for racing in the Soling class. He has recently campaigned his Soling on the Great Lakes, and will tell us about that as well as other experiences all around the U. S. and Canada.

Larry Cheek, author, teacher, and amateur boatbuilder. Larry is author of the book The Year of the Boat in which he tells about building a 12-foot sailing dinghy from plans, not from a kit. He is presently building a 19-foot sailboat, also from plans. He will talk about his boat-building experiences, and perhaps also about work in his real life as a teacher at UW and as architecture critic for the P-I.

Bill Mains. In Charleston, S.C. in 1996 Bill was given a wrecked 19' racing catamaran with no spars or sails and only one rudder. He converted it to a pontoon boat and ran the entire Intracoastal Waterway in it. Bill will give us the details and show graphics about his adventure.

Bob Miller. Bob will present a DVD "The Natural Wonders of Sedona, AZ". He says, "For those who have been to Sedona, AZ, this DVD is an aerial view of the area around Sedona, AZ. For those who have never been there, it will make you aware of what I feel is one of the most visually outstanding places on our planet. This is my 'Rick Steves' moment. I spent one week there in September, 2008 and was mesmerized the entire week I was there. If you haven't been there, call your travel agent and go!"

Andy Schwenk, Northwest Rigging. Andy will give us a rundown of his adventures and misadventures, successes and failures, and other experiences in his work as a sailboat rigger.

Eric Johnson and Bridget Eames. Eric and Bridget are CYC Junior members and are members of the Sea Scout Ship Corinthian. This past summer they crewed on the USCG Barque "Eagle" on a cruise from Seattle to Panama via the Galapagos Islands, and will tell us all about it.

Paul Thorlakson, Seattle Yacht Club Mini-12 Fleet. Paul will talk about his experiences sailing his Mini-12 on Portage Bay and elsewhere. Several CYC members have also owned Mini-12s and may weigh in with their own stories.

Don Johnson, Long Time Cruising Sailor. Don has cruised onshore and offshore for more than 40 years. He has cruised the North American coast from Newfoundland to the Caribbean, made multiple crossings of the Atlantic Ocean, and cruised the Baltic and Mediterranean Seas.

Annual Herring and Aquavit Holiday Luncheon. Staff Commodore David Blakemore will produce the show. Olaf Kvamme. Olaf, a real live Norwegian, will be our speaker at our annual Aquavit & Pickled Herring Lunch. Olaf will talk about the Nordic Heritage Museum's project to restore a 180 year old Norwegian fishing boat donated to the museum by Volvo Corp. Also there is the story of a Viking boat built in Seattle for the 1909 Exposition that was burned by arsonists in San Diego, CA. Olaf will be accompanied by Karen Hansen, Marketing director of the Nordic Heritage Museum

Given the state of the streets today and the likely prospect that driving tomorrow will not be much better, I think it prudent that we cancel lunch tomorrow, December 22. Bruce will let both Karen and Mike know not to come to work. We will give our Christmas gifts to Karen and Mike at lunch on 12/29.

Keith Wittemore. President of Kvichak Marine and husband of KK. Keith will talk about the design and production of the new 41' RBM ( Response Boat Medium) his firm is producing for the U.S. Coastguard. Keith is also listed twice on the CYC Honor Roll Of Champions, 2004 Winner of the J24 Italian National Championship and 2005 winner of the J24 Canadian Nationals.

Geoffrey Braden. Geoffrey is a semi-retired wooden boat shipwright and part of the staff at the Center For Wooden Boats. Geffrey will talk about the history and construction of half hull models and their roll in naval architecture. We will have a half hull model display. The CWB also has half hull model workshops available for all you who like to work with wood and like the smell of fresh sawdust.

Carol and Carl Buchan. They are going to talk about teamwork in winning sailboat races. As far as their expertise on the subject, their names can be found on 30 of the plaques on the CYC Honor Roll of Champions.

Dick Wagner. Dick is a Founding Board Member of the Center For Wooden Boats. Dick spoke to the Monday Lunch on 2/19/07. The CBW has some exciting new things in the works. Dick will talk about (1) the further development of the South Lake Union facility, (2) the developent of the Camano Island site and (3) the expansion to the North Lake Union site.

Captain Dale Peterson. Dale is the Capt. of the restored Virginia V which is one of two operating wood hull steam propeller propulsion commercial vessels still operating in the U.S. The Virginia V built in 1922 and powered by a 1898 triple expansion steam engine from the Virginia IV, went through an extensive $ 7 million restoration to the wood hull and engine to keep the "old girl" alive into the 21st Century. Dale will be accompanied by Sandra Garvin, the Deckhand and Bartender on the Virginia V. Dale was the CYC Bar Manager in 1976-77. Question, is it the Virginia Five?, or the Virginia Vee? Captain Dale will settle this dilemma during his talk.

Sue Joerger, Executive Director of Puget Soundkeepers. Puget Soundkeepers is an organization that protects the water quality of Puget Sound. Sue was also the CYC Manager for a year in the 1990's.

Tom Milne, Remote Medical. Tom will be back as a speaker to follow up on his previous presentation on 6/6/08. In response to the question as to where one can get some of the new first aid products he discussed on 6/6/08, Tom will have a display of them and we will also be able to order items directly from Tom after the meeting.

Tom will be prepared to answer any and all questions about his work and his company's products.

Also Tom was recently on King TV as the "Kayak Commuter" Tom sometimes commutes 13 miles from his West Seattle home to Fisherman's Terminal. To see the King TV broadcast Google "Kayak Commuter."

Tammi who has been a speaker to the CYC Monday Lunch in the past will give an update on the new anchoring, mooring and unoccupied vessel regulations for Bainbridge Island. She will also discuss the availability to purchase oyster seeding kits now that the oyster research that has been going on in Eagle Harbor has been concluded.

Bob Wood of Seattle Infrared Themography. Bob will talk about how infrared themography can be used to inspect fiberglass hulls in a non-intrusive method to detect absorption of water under the gel coat and in the fiberglass layup. Infrared can also be used for mechanical/electrical and structural analysis. Bob will also discuss how infrared is used today for nighttime navigation, man overboard situations, marine mammal research and other applications.

NO MEETING AT CYC SHILSHOLE CLUBHOUSE. Special Cruising CYC Monday Lunch on one of Paul Lamarches' Emerald City Charters' 70' Sailing Yachts from 11:00 AM to 1:00PM. The cruise will leave from Pier 54 Seattle waterfront at 11:00 AM sharp, so plan on getting there at 10:30 AM! The Sailboat will be the "Obsession", a 70' Maxi. Lunch consisting of sandwich trays, dessert trays and bottled water will be served on board. If you want beer or wine it will be BYOB. The cost of the cruise and lunch will be $25.00. The maximum number of attendees will be 40. You will have to sign up and prepay to come. A signup sheet will be available at the 6/28/80 Monday Lunch. More details to follow.

Marty Godsil. Marty is a CYC Legend winning the 1974, 1975, 1976 Dragon North American Championships, the 1978 Duke of Edinburgh Dragon Championship and the 1980 Netherlands Dragon Championship.

Bill Buchan Sr. Memorial Plaque Rededication. At 1330, after Marty Godsil's program, the CYC Monday Lunch group will walk down enmass to the new L Dock with Bill Buchan Jr. and family to rededicate the Bill Buchan Sr. plaque.

Tom Milne from Remote Medical. Tom will give a program called "First Aid in Boating." Tom specializes in talking about how to prepare for and survive medical emergencies when you are out on a boat or in the mountains and there is no immediate 911 help.

Suzette Connolly, CYC Secretary. Suzette and her husband Paul Baker did a six year circumnavigation of the World's oceans 2000-2006 via Cape of Good Hope and the Panama Canal in a Cal 35. Suzette will not have time to tell all of the events that happened, but will select a few of the events. We may have to have her back a few times to tell all of the story.

Judy and Gordy Cole. CRISIS AT SEA! In early February 2008 Judy and Gordy Cole were helping to deliver a Frers 65 sailboat from Ixtapa, Mexico to Seattle, Wa. One evening, heading north off Baja California in 30 knot winds and heavy seas, the crew was confronted with heavy smoke in the cabin and floorboards awash. Without quick action the ship was headed to the bottom of the ocean!

Come listen to how the crew saved the ship, and what the cause of the crisis was. It involves someone using non marine materials for a though hull fitting and surveyors missing the booboo, which was almost catastrophic.

Tom Nylund, CYC, Honorary Life Member. Tom will show and discuss his construction of his beautiful Cape George 36, customized to accomodate his 6' 7" height. The boat should be named " Headroom Galore." The wood workmanship and brightwork of Tom's boat is something to behold!

Peter Jennings will bring his Seawind along to the lunch and if there is interest he could sail after lunch at Green Lake down at the old Aquatic Center at the south end. He will also try to get Gordy Cole to bring his Victoria RC yacht to the lunch.

Paul Bieker, World Class Yacht Designer. Paul worked on the design team for the America's Cup yacht "Oracle" and is designing new excitng racing sailboats such as carbon fiber International 14's. Jonathan McKee picked Paul to design leading edge 35' and 44' racing yachts for him. Paul will talk about what is new in racing yacht design.

Scott Anderson, of CSR Marine. This is a follow-up of a presentation Scott did in the the Fall of 2006 about the efficacy of the new Ceracote Bottom paint that was applied to Tom O'Brien's sailboat. Also Scott will talk about his dealings with the Wash. State Dept. of Ecology and what its impact might be to our pocketbooks. CSR Marine is also one of three ecology test sites for the electrical coagulation of drain water to eliminate copper from boat yard runoff. Come and learn all about it!

Annual Herring And Aquavit Celebration. Our speaker will be Kristine Leander, President of Leif Erickson International Foundation. The Port Of Seattle owns the recently renovated Leif Erickson Statute but the Leif Erickson International Foundation was involved in the new update and the addition of the Rune Stones. Kristine will explain the renovation story. For those of you with Scandinavian heritage, there is still time for you to get your ancestor's names who immigrated to the United States added to the Rune Stones. Come and learn how.

Bob Miller (Famous Hawaiian Kahuna) wll show his pictures of the 2007 International Festival of Canoes in Maui, HI May 12-26, 2007. Since 1999, Maui has invited canoe carving masters with 5-7 apprentices from each of the Polynesian Island Groups to come to Maui to participate in carving canoes to help perpetuate their island's culture among the young.

Each team starts out with a 48" X 30 ' raw log and is expected to finish with a completed canoe by the end of the festival. When you go to Hawaii and see those beautiful outrigger canoes in the hotel lobbies...this is were a lot of them come from. The hotels sponsor the carving teams and get to keep the finished canoes. On the last day of the festival they launch the canoes with ancient chants and ceremonies and paddle off into the sunset.

Cara Cruikshank, Director of the organization "Oysters for Salmon." Cara will talk about how her organization reintroduces oysters and mussels into bays and around docks to help clear pollution from the water. Currently this is being done at Eagle Harbor on Bainbrige Island. There is also a major project like this ongoing in Chesapeake Bay. Each mature oyster will filter 55 galloms of water per day.

Come and hear Cara explain how we can put these critters to work to clean up our waters!

Speaker: Tammi Allen, Bainbridge Island Harbormaster

Tammi, who spoke to the CYC Monday Lunch several years ago will speak about the implementation of the Bainbridge Island Comprehensive Harbor Plan and explain the actual progress to date of implementation versus the original plan.

Why is this important to you? Environmental and ecological issues such as eel grass beds make some old anchoring areas off limits today. Some areas of past pollution have been capped with sand and dredged materials to seal in the pollution and anchoring tends to expose the pollution, thus they are now no-anchor zones.

Tammi will bring the CYC Monday Lunch attendees up to date with the current Bainbridge Island situation.

Invite wives and friends or anyone who is interested in using Bainbridge Island as an anchoring place to this meeting.
