FOREWORD
(back to contents)
Your 1998 CYC Racebook contains the sailing instructions for all CYC races (except for the Puget Sound Spring Regatta, the Leukemia Cup, the Puget Sound Sailing Championship and the Puget Sound Women’s Keelboat Regatta, for which special sailing instructions will be issued). It also serves as the Notice of Race for all CYC races. The Racebook is divided into five sections: The introductory pages include key phone numbers, 1998 officers, a table of contents and this Foreword. These are followed by four chapters. Chapter 1 contains a complete schedule of CYC races for the current year, as well as information on entry fees. Chapter 2 contains the sailing instructions for the races in the Lake Washington program; Chapters 3 and 4 serve this function for the Puget Sound Large Boat and the Puget Sound One-Design programs. As in past years, the mark descriptions for the Lake and Sound are found inside the front and back covers. Several registration forms are tucked into each copy of the handbook.
The sailing instructions this year are, essentially, the same as they were in 1997. The noteworthy changes this year are: For all races on both the Lake and the Sound, the winner of a race now receives 1 point instead of 3/4 of a point. This brings our scoring into line with the scoring now recommended by the International Sailing Federation and US SAILING. For the Puget Sound Large Boat races, a boat rated by PHRF for the use of a water-ballast system will be permitted to use such a system. On Lake Washington, the mark descriptions have been changed because there are no longer any permanent CYC marks in place. Also, the dates for the Nelson Point Race, the South Point Race and the Moonlight Race have been changed since preliminary schedules were published.
For the Wednesday Evening Series on Puget Sound, an experimental scoring system, similar to a golf handicap system, may be used in addition to the traditional system described on page III-3. Check the notice board at the Shilshole Clubhouse for details.
The heart and soul of any club is the fun the members have at club events. Don't forget that, whether you sail on the Sound or the Lake, the clubhouse will be open after every race, and food and drink will be available for your crew and your families. Come on in and swap stories with your competitors!
Thanks to all who made suggestions for improving this year’s Racebook, especially George Trusk, Werner Ohmes, Bo Nanna, Sandy Pratt, Jerry Young and Dave Champion.
These are your programs. CYC is always happy to receive suggestions for improving its racing programs or the Racebook. Please send us your suggestions for 1999.
