CYC juniors took three of the top five places in the Optimist dinghy fleet at the Junior Olympics regatta held the last weekend of August on Shilshole Bay. The event was sponsored by Seattle Yacht Club and based at the Corinthian Shilshole clubhouse.

The winning Opti sailor was CYC’s Nico Martin, who won four of the six races. Other members in the top five were Nico’s brother Julian, second, and Blake Bentzen, fourth. Emme Beckman finished, seventh, Adam Krzeszowski, ninth and Analucia Clarkson, eleventh.

Gaston Martin, Nico’s father, said Nico sailed good tactical races and benefitted from his low weight, 65 pounds, in light air.

“But there were other light kids, and they didn’t come close,” Gaston said. “He sailed very good tactics, especially in one race where he passed another competitor because he foresaw a fleet of Lasers and did a quick tack, leaving the Lasers to leeward of him but to windward of his competitor.”

At 10 years old, Nico was competing against youngsters up to 14, his father said, noting, “He has a great future.”
