Growing and Thriving
As this Helmsman goes to print at the end of September, I look back with pride at what the club has done for its members and equally look forward with great optimism to what we are planning to accomplish for you. I believe we still embrace the goals that our club’s founders envisioned when we formed on January 31, 1945. We were then a small group of Sailors that liked to race, enjoyed cruising, and liked to gather socially. From then to now we have grown to become the preeminent club for racing in the region. We actively cruise together year around. And with the expansion of the six Vanguard 15s in addition to the 16 Optis, our youth sailing has continued each summer to teach over 100 kids how to sail. The two person Vanguards have also been a great boat to teach adults how to sail. Further, the Vanguards are for member use at any time – once they have passed the on the water skills test by a certified instructor. I encourage all of you to come down and try them out.
As fall season comes and the days get cooler and the leaves get more colorful, our activities turn toward welcoming new members, providing nautical educational lectures and seminars, as well as holding classes on knot tying and sewing. We will continue with our dinners and social gatherings on Thursdays and Fridays.
The addition of nearly 100 new members since the beginning of the year is an indication that we are doing a lot of things right, as our current members are the main source for new members. Thank you and Welcome Aboard!
Our amazing volunteers and staff have accomplished all of the above. Yet, with the increased activities on and off the water both at Leschi and Shilshole we are in greater need for volunteers. I ask more of you to say, “YES” when asked, for too often it is the same people who volunteer.
I am committed to continually improving your CYC experiences and look forward to meeting more of you. See you around the club, on the docks and on the water.
Your Commodore,
Denny Vaughan
