NOTICE TO COMPETITORS: CSS Scatchet Head Race
Please be advised that the retired Forrestal-class aircraft carrier “USS Independence” will be under tow throughout the majority of the scheduled Scatchet Head race on March 11, 2017.
The current schedule is to depart the waters near Blake Island on or about noon and head northbound. This is a “dead ship” tow, meaning it has no propulsion or steering ability. The vessel will have a variety of accompanying tugs, and the cooperation of competitors is requested by all involved parties. The towline will be 2000 feet long, and the craft itself is 1070 feet LOA.
As such, we remind competitors that the standard USN avoidance zone of ½ NM should be strictly observed, and will be enforced. Monitoring of Seattle Traffic VHF 14 ( which is part of our regular competitor obligations) is further reinforced.
Your cooperation ( and respect ) in this historic passing is appreciated.
Please contact the Race Fleet Captain, Matthew Wood, if you have any questions.
