The New Year started off with a bang with the annual dinner and awards presentation to those sailors who had a great sailing seasons in 2014. We had more than 100 individual at the Club, including several junior sailors member who were recipients of many of the awards. In short, the clubhouse was packed. As CYC’s first major sailing event of 2015, the Center Sound Series started with a bang. All three race were completed with strong, consistent breezes. The Scatchet Head race saw the strongest breeze with 18 to 20 spinnakers damaged and two boats losing their masts. The racing throughout the spring has been fabulous. With that said we need to thank all of the Staff and Volunteers who made the CYC participation at the Boat Show, the Cruising series talks, and Thursday and Friday night dinners such a great success prior to the start of any of our racing program. And of course we can’t forget the heart breaking loss by the Seahawks in the Super Bowl.

While CYC remains a sailing club, we continue to develop more activities to bring members to the Club and to enhance the utilization of the club for the benefit of the members. The most important change has been the rediscovery of why we have a club and what we’re all about. As a result of our renewed perspective, we are on our way to repopulating our club. We had population of a 552 memberships, composed of 901 adults and 220 kids for a total community size of 1,121. As a result of the Seattle Boat Show in 2015 we have increased our membership base by 21 adult family members for a projected total membership of 571, and that is not including the more than 20 families that expressed as interest in our junior programs. CYC currently has the largest contingent of Junior Sails at the USODA attending the Team Trials at Coral Reef Yacht Club in Miami Florida. For some of these juiors it’s their first ever trip to Florida.

The addition of new members has been most welcoming to the health of our Club. With new members comes new energy, purpose, and a feeling of relief from our long-standing members who have weathered a long watch. Thanks to everyone – those who have stayed for life or joined/rejoined recently – the success of the Club is enhanced by the contribution of new members, the old guard and the continued support of the sailing community at large.

Now that we’re weathered a storm we can look to the future and continue our planning and program development. The acquisition of the dingy docks and the planning for the next clubhouse haul out in fall of 2020 right after Grand Prix that year are both taking shape. The continued growth of the Club has secures our longer-term financial future and the pursuit of more and new ambitions tasks come with that growth. We have shifted gears a bit. Our emphasis now that we’re having success attracting people is to continue to help our people and families connect with each other. Interaction will become our focus. You can always help by showing up to any event and not see familiar members and making friends with our new members.  As Brian Watkins has said, our people are pretty awesome, so please join us on Thursday and Friday’s at the club for dinner, there is no better deal in town.

Thank you for being a member of Corinthian, supporting your fellow members, and helping to grow the sailing community through our club.

Welcome home,

Stuart Burnell
