CYC Club Sailboat Usage Policy and Skills Test Procedures

CYC members must pass a skills proficiency test facilitated by a CYC board member, staff
member, or authorized/skilled designee before using club sailboats. Separate skills tests will be
performed for each type of sailboat (i.e., Opti and Vanguard 15), as well as for different types of
wind conditions (i.e., light (<5 kts), medium (<10 kts), and whitecapping conditions) and event
types (e.g., instructed events with safety boat, racing events with RC boat, chaired group events,
and solo events) to demonstrate skills for that set of boat, event, season, and wind conditions.

General Policy Guidelines:

  • All participants (skipper and crew) must be proficient swimmers, wear USCG-approved
lifejackets, and wear appropriate clothing/wetsuit/drysuit for water/air temperatures.
  • All participants must sign an acknowledgment of usage policy and terms.
  • Participants under the age of 14 must have a parent or guardian present on the water near
their child when using club boats.
  • Participants are responsible for any damage during their usage of a club boat.

Basic Skills Test Details (For Sailing With Safety Boat Present):

  • Rig the boat without assistance.
  • Leave the dock safely without unintentional boat contacts.
  • Sail upwind with 2-3 tacks.
  • Sail downwind with 2-3 gybes.

Advanced Skills Test Details (For Sailing When Safety Boat Is Not Present):

Sailboat Usage Details:

  • Boat usage requests should be submitted to a CYC board member, staff member, or
authorized/skilled designee in advance of usage.
  • Member will be notified when their boat usage request is approved.
  • Members will log boats in and out before and after usage in a logbook maintained within
the clubhouse. Any damage or issues identified with the boat will be noted.
